To seed BUT How to seed? (that could be the question!)

I am sure that with the sunny weather, many hands are itching to get into the dirt.
As we are cleaning up the Christmas stuff in town, we have the get our seeding and cutting part set up in the greenhouse at home.
That is WHERE IT ALL STARTS !
You are the lucky ones that will get a preview behind the closed doors.
SO, here we go:

As many do in the gardens, seeding is done "by hand. "
(usually 2 but since i could not take a picture otherwise, there is only 1 hand shown)

Since there is so much seeding to do in a commercial greenhouse, we have different seeding machinery to help us out.  We will show you 1 seeding machine per post.

This one is called the "EASY SEEDER"

Indeed, this seeder makes seeding a lot easier.
There are 2 parts: the seed box and seed plate
Per plate, we have different totals of holes.  Depending on how many seeds we want to seed in 1 turn, we change plates.  This plate for example has 432 holes, which means that in a few seconds we can seed that many seeds.
The seeder is attached to a vacuum cleaner.  The suction of this tool will keep the seeds in the holes of the plate.
Then we turn the seed plate over "the plug flat" which is shown underneath and turn the vacuum cleaner off The seeds will fall nicely in the little squares of the plug flat.
Seeding in PLUG FLATS makes the transplanting a lot easier afterwards.

Good to know:
OFTEN we have seeds left over after seeding season.  No problem to keep them over till the next year BUT you will have to keep them at a cool spot.
When you place them in a warm area, seeds can start to dry out which will result in a lower germination percentage.

Every year that you keep seeds over, a seed will loose germination percentage.
So, some good advice might be to seed a little extra to make sure you will have enough plants at the end in the garden.

That is it for now.  Until next time again.

Before we go though, let us introduce you to LEO.  A friendly, handsome fella who found his way to our greenhouse.  (I am sure he knows he is gorgeous!)
